Federal tax credit for home charging equipment

The federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (IRS Form 8911) can apply to home charging equipment and its installation, but eligibility is geographic — the property generally must sit in an eligible census tract. Large parts of Indiana qualify, and large parts do not, sometimes on opposite sides of the same street.

It is a tax credit, not a rebate: you pay the installer in full and claim it when you file. Keep the equipment invoice, the labor invoice, and the permit record. Ask your tax professional to verify your address against the current IRS eligibility tool before you count on it.

Off-peak rates are usually worth more than a one-time rebate

For most Indiana homeowners, the real savings are not the install rebate — they are the charging rate. Several Indiana utilities offer time-of-use or off-peak plans that price overnight electricity well below the standard residential rate. If you charge between roughly 10 PM and 6 AM, that difference compounds every month for as long as you own the car.

Some programs require a separate meter or a utility-controlled load management device on the circuit. Tell your installer up front if you plan to enroll, because it can change where the circuit is landed and whether an additional meter socket is needed.

What to document during your installation

Whatever program you apply to, the paperwork requests are similar. Get an itemized invoice that separates equipment from labor, a copy of the electrical permit and final inspection, the charger make, model, and serial number, and a photo of the installed unit and the breaker.

Ask for these at the time of install. Chasing a contractor for documentation three months later is the single most common reason Indiana homeowners miss a rebate deadline.

Other places incentives show up

Automakers frequently bundle a charger, an installation credit, or free public charging with a new EV purchase or lease — check what your dealer already owes you before buying hardware separately.

Charger manufacturers run seasonal promotions and rebates on their own units. Some Indiana municipalities and employers also run limited programs, and multi-family properties have separate options that do not apply to single-family homes.
