How Level 2 compares to a standard outlet
Level 1 charging uses a normal 120-volt household outlet and adds about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. For a plug-in hybrid or a very low-mileage household that can work indefinitely.
For a full battery EV, Level 1 usually means the car never quite catches up during a normal week. Level 2 solves that with a dedicated 240-volt circuit.
Choosing an amperage
32-amp chargers on a 40-amp circuit are the value sweet spot for most Indiana households and are easier to fit on a constrained panel.
40 to 48-amp chargers are worth it for large-battery trucks and SUVs, long commutes, or two-EV households. They need more panel capacity, which is why the panel photo matters.
Hardwired versus plug-in
Plug-in chargers use a NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 receptacle and are simple to replace or take with you. Hardwired units are required above 48 amps and are often preferred for outdoor installations.
Both are code-compliant when installed properly on a dedicated circuit with the correct breaker.
