Start with the panel
If your panel has capacity and an open double-pole slot, you avoid the most expensive possible line item. If it does not, the conversation shifts to tandem breakers, a subpanel, load management, or a service upgrade — in roughly that order of cost.
A single photo of the open panel answers this question faster than any phone call.
Then measure the distance
Walk from the panel to where you want the charger and count your steps. Every extra run of conduit and wire adds material and labor, and runs through finished ceilings or crawlspaces cost more than a straight shot along an unfinished garage wall.
Then account for the environment
Outdoor mounting requires weather-rated equipment and methods. A detached garage usually means a buried feeder. Both are common in Indiana and both change the number meaningfully.
Compare quotes on scope, not price
Ask every installer whether the quote includes the charger, the breaker, the permit, and the inspection. A number that excludes two of those is not the lower quote it appears to be.
