The numbers
Level 1 adds roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour, or about 40 to 60 miles over a 12-hour overnight charge. Level 2 at 40 amps adds roughly 25 to 30 miles per hour, or well over 300 miles overnight.
When Level 1 is genuinely enough
Plug-in hybrids. Second cars. Households driving under 35 miles a day who can leave the car plugged in most nights. There is no shame in it and it costs nothing to install.
When to move to Level 2
Longer commutes, cold Indiana winters that reduce efficiency, occasional back-to-back long days, or two EVs sharing one driveway. Level 2 removes the planning burden entirely.
